Hepatitis C

  • Hepatitis C is a member of the flaviviridae family. In humans it can only survive by replicating. Thus if replication is completely suppressed the virus cannot survive and cure is possible.
  • The virus was identified for the first time in 1989. Prior to that its presence was suspected as a cause of so-called non-A-non B hepatitis.
  • Final identification required the use of the techniques of molecular biology and genetic engineering.
  • The first commercial test for antibodies to hepatitis C became available in 1990, and the current generation of tests was first introduced in 1993.
