- Ribavirin has been shown to cause fetal abnormalities in experimental animals. It is considered to be a “teratogen”, i.e., capable of inducing fetal abnormalities in man as well. However, there are no documented cases of fetal abnormalities occurring in women using ribavirin, nor in women whose male partners are using ribavirin.
- Nonetheless, because of the potential risk pregnancy is a contraindication to hepatitis C treatment. When a sexually active man or woman is being treated for hepatitis C contraception is essential for the duration of treatment and for 6 months after completion of treatment. This holds true whether the patient is male or female.
