Terminology

A number of abbreviations are commonly used in the management of hepatitis C. These are given below, together with their meanings

RVR: Rapid virologic response
Undetectable HCV RNA at week 4 of therapy. RVR is the best predictor of Sustained Virologic Response (SVR)

EVR: Early virologic response

  • > 2 log decline in HCV RNA concentration at week 12 compared to baseline,
    or
  • Undetectable HCV RNA at week 12 of therapy.

EOT: End of treatment response.
This is the HCV RNA concentration at the end of treatment.

SVR: Sustained virologic response.

  • Undetectable HCV RNA levels 24 weeks after the end of treatment.
  • SVR is, for practical purposes a cure.
  • Relapse after SVR is uncommon (<2%).
  • There is no progression of disease, and the patient is no longer infectious.

Non-responder:
A patient in whom during a previous course of therapy the virus (HCV RNA) did not become undetectable at any point during therapy.

Relapser:
A patient in whom during a previous course of therapy the HCV RNA was undetectable at or before week 24 but reappeared either during treatment or in the six months follow up post therapy
